    Decentralized Finance – A Systematic Literature Review and Research Directions

    Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is the (r)evolutionary movement to create a solely code-based, intermediary-independent financial system—a movement which has grown from 4bnto4bn to 104bn in assets locked in the last three years. We present the first systematic literature review of the yet fragmented DeFi research field. By identifying, analyzing, and integrating 83 peer-reviewed DeFi-related publications, our results contribute fivefold. First, we confirm the increasing growth of academic DeFi publications through systematic analysis. Second, we frame DeFi-related literature into three levels of abstraction (micro, meso, and macro) and seven subcategories. Third, we identify Ethereum as the blockchain in main academic focus. Fourth, we show that prototyping is the dominant research method applied whereas only one paper has used primary research data. Fifth, we derive four prioritized research avenues, namely concerning i) DeFi protocol interaction and aggregation platforms, ii) decentralized off-chain data integration to DeFi, iii) DeFi agents, and iv) regulation

    Transient central hypoxemia due to intermittent high-degree atrioventricular block in a heart-transplanted patient diagnosed during routine electroencephalography: a case report.

    BACKGROUND Bradycardia frequently occurs in heart-transplanted patients, mainly as a temporally restricted manifestation early after transplantation and often without symptoms. A high-degree atrioventricular block is mostly symptomatic through cerebral hypoxia induced through cerebral hypoperfusion. Only a few published cases show this specific electroencephalography result in this context. The purpose of this case is to bring attention to atypical manifestations of typical cardiac complications after heart transplantation and the importance of perseverance in the diagnostic. CASE PRESENTATION A Central European man in his 50s with history of heart transplantation 31 years previously was admitted to the internal medicine ward for short-lived recurrent episodes of generalized weakness with multiple falls but without loss of consciousness. During routine electroencephalography, the patient perceived this recurrent sensation. This episode coincided with a transient third-degree atrioventricular block followed 8-10 seconds later by a generalized slowing of the electroencephalography, reflecting cerebral hypoxia due to cerebral hypoperfusion. Holter monitoring confirmed the diagnosis. A pacemaker was implanted, consequently resolving the episodes. CONCLUSION This case report illustrates the pathophysiological central hypoxemic origin of episodes of generalized weakness caused by a high-degree atrioventricular block in a patient surviving 29 years after heart transplant. It highlights the benefit of electroencephalography as a diagnostic tool in well-selected patients

    Ice Formation on Kaolinite: Insights from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

    The formation of ice affects many aspects of our everyday life as well as technologies such as cryotherapy and cryopreservation. Foreign substances almost always aid water freezing through heterogeneous ice nucleation, but the molecular details of this process remain largely unknown. In fact, insight into the microscopic mechanism of ice formation on different substrates is difficult to obtain even via state-of-the-art experimental techniques. At the same time, atomistic simulations of heterogeneous ice nucleation frequently face extraordinary challenges due to the complexity of the water-substrate interaction and the long timescales that characterize nucleation events. Here, we have investigated several aspects of molecular dynamics simulations of heterogeneous ice nucleation considering as a prototypical ice nucleating material the clay mineral kaolinite, which is of relevance in atmospheric science. We show via seeded molecular dynamics simulations that ice nucleation on the hydroxylated (001) face of kaolinite proceeds exclusively via the formation of the hexagonal ice polytype. The critical nucleus size is two times smaller than that obtained for homogeneous nucleation at the same supercooling. Previous findings suggested that the flexibility of the kaolinite surface can alter the time scale for ice nucleation within molecular dynamics simulations. However, we here demonstrate that equally flexible (or non flexible) kaolinite surfaces can lead to very different outcomes in terms of ice formation, according to whether or not the surface relaxation of the clay is taken into account. We show that very small structural changes upon relaxation dramatically alter the ability of kaolinite to provide a template for the formation of a hexagonal overlayer of water molecules at the water-kaolinite interface, and that this relaxation therefore determines the nucleation ability of this mineral

IL-6-like cytokines are not only key regulators of innate immunity and inflammation but are also essential factors for the differentiation and development of the somatosensory system. Mice with a null mutation of gp130 in primary nociceptive afferents (SNS-gp130−/−) are largely protected from hypersensitivity to mechanical stimuli in mouse models of pathological pain. Therefore, we set out to investigate how neuronal gp130 regulates mechanonociception. SNS-gp130−/− mice revealed reduced mechanosensitivity to high mechanical forces in the von Frey assay in vivo, and this was associated with a reduced sensitivity of nociceptive primary afferents in vitro. Together with these findings, transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) mRNA expression was significantly reduced in DRG from SNS-gp130−/− mice. This was also reflected by a reduced number of neurons responding with calcium transients to TRPA1 agonists in primary DRG cultures. Downregulation of Trpa1 expression was predominantly discovered in nonpeptidergic neurons, with the deficit becoming evident during stages of early postnatal development. Regulation of Trpa1 mRNA expression levels downstream of gp130 involved the classical Janus kinase family-signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway. Our results closely link proinflammatory cytokines to the expression of TRPA1, both of which have been shown to contribute to hypersensitive pain states. We suggest that gp130 has an essential role in mechanonociception and in the regulation of TRPA1 expression

    PEDIATRIC TULAREMIA– A CASE SERIES FROM A SINGLE CENTER IN SWITZERLAND

    Background The incidence of tularemia has recently increased throughout Europe. Pediatric tularemia typically presents with ulceroglandular or glandular disease and requires antimicrobial therapy not used in the empirical management of childhood acute lymphadenitis. We describe the clinical presentation and course in a case series comprising 20 patients. Methods Retrospective analysis of a single-center case series of microbiologically confirmed tularemia in patients below 16 years of age diagnosed between 2010 and 2021. Results Nineteen patients (95%) presented with ulceroglandular (n = 14) or glandular disease (n = 5), respectively. A characteristic entry site lesion (eschar) was present in 14 (74%). Fever was present at illness onset in 15 patients (75%) and disappeared in all patients before targeted therapy was initiated. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology in 18 patients (90%). While immunochromatography (ICT) was positive as early as on day 7, a microagglutination test (MAT) titer 1:≥160 was found no earlier than on day 13. Sixteen patients (80%) were initially treated with an antimicrobial agent ineffective against F. tularensis. The median delay (range) from illness onset to initiation of targeted therapy was 12 days (range, 6-40). Surgical incision and drainage was ultimately performed in 12 patients (60%). Conclusion Pediatric tularemia in Switzerland usually presents with early, self-limiting fever, and a characteristic entry site lesion with regional lymphadenopathy draining the scalp or legs. Particularly in association with a tick exposure history, this presentation may allow early first-line therapy with an agent specifically targeting F. tularensis, potentially obviating the need for surgical therapy

    The role of response modalities in cognitive task representations

    The execution of a task necessitates the use of a specific response modality. We examined the role of different response modalities by using a task-switching paradigm. In Experiment 1, subjects switched between two numerical judgments, whereas response modality (vocal vs. manual vs. foot responses) was manipulated between groups. We found judgment-shift costs in each group, that is irrespective of the response modality. In Experiment 2, subjects switched between response modalities (vocal vs. manual, vocal vs. foot, or manual vs. foot). We observed response-modality shift costs that were comparable in all groups. In sum, the experiments suggest that the response modality (combination) does not affect switching per se. Yet, modality-shift costs occur when subjects switch between response modalities. Thus, we suppose that modality-shift costs are not due to a purely motor-related mechanisms but rather emerge from a general switching process. Consequently, the response modality has to be considered as a cognitive component in models of task switching

    In 2007 and 2008, Yu and Smith published their seminal studies on cross-situational word learning (CSWL) in adults and infants, showing that word-object-mappings can be acquired from distributed statistics despite in-the-moment uncertainty. Since then, the CSWL paradigm has been used extensively to better understand (statistical) word learning in different language learners and under different learning conditions. The goal of this review is to provide an entry-level overview of findings and themes that have emerged in 15 years of research on CSWL across three topic areas (mechanisms of CSWL, CSWL across different learner and task characteristics) and to highlight the questions that remain to be answered
